WINTER AND SPRING -- JUNIOR YEAR

 
  January 24 Juniors take SAT I
 
  January 25 Meeting for parents and students to begin college counseling process
 
  January 27 Give Mr. Burke or Ms. Lenger a note with college counselor preference, if you have one
 
  January 28 College Counselor assignments posted
 
  January 29 Junior Self-Evaluation workshop
 
  February 4 Junior Self-Evaluation workshop continued
 
  February 7 Many Juniors take ACT
 
  Week of February 23 Student Self-Evaluations due to college counselor.   Complete on Naviance.
 
  Late February Course selections reviewed and approved by student's college counselor.
 
  March 14 Some Juniors may retake SAT I  (if unsatisfied with January score or had a scheduling conflict in January).   PLEASE NOTE THAT PEMBROKE HILL IS NOT A TEST CENTER FOR THE MARCH TEST, NOR WILL THE COLLEGE COUNSELORS SIGN STUDENTS UP FOR THIS TEST. STUDENTS WISHING TO RETAKE THE SAT IN MARCH WILL NEED TO REGISTER ON THEIR OWN TO TAKE IT AT A SITE OF THEIR CHOOSING.   THE REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 10.
 
  March 16 - March 27 Spring Break: consider taking a trip to visit colleges.
 
  April 4 Juniors take ACT (if unsatisfied with February score or had a scheduling conflict on the February date).   STUDENTS WISHING TO RE-TAKE THE ACT IN APRIL WILL NEED TO REGISTER ON THEIR OWN--REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 27.
 
  February-May College advisor, parents and student should meet prior to the end of May to discuss the parameters which will help develop the initial long list of colleges.  Students should come to this meeting with a resume   (See sample resume) and prepared to discuss issues such as geography, size of college, campus setting, cost and special needs and interests.  (See College Counseling Inventory)
 
  Remainder of Spring/Summer The spring meeting will result in a list of colleges for the student and parents to consider.  It is the student's responsibility to research the colleges during the summer, to write to the colleges for materials and to read about the schools in various guidebooks and/or on college websites.
 
  May 2 Some Juniors retake SAT I   (although Juniors taking AP exams would probably be better advised to spend their time on this particular weekend studying for those tests instead).   STUDENTS WISHING TO RE-TAKE THE SAT IN MAY WILL NEED TO REGISTER ON THEIR OWN. REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS MARCH 31.
 
  May 23 Graduation for the Class of 2009.
 
  June 6 Many juniors take SAT II tests in two or three subjects  -- usually Math (either level 1 or level 2) and one or two subject(s) of academic strength.   CONSULT ADMISSIONS LITERATURE OF THE COLLEGES IN WHICH YOU ARE INTERESTED FOR SPECIFIC SAT SUBJECT TEST REQUIREMENTS.

PLEASE KEEP THIS DATE IN MIND AS YOU SCHEDULE SUMMER TRAVEL AND/OR VACATION PLANS.

STUDENTS WISHING TO RE-TAKE THE SAT OR SAT SUBJECT TESTS IN JUNE CAN REGISTER AS A GROUP ON APRIL 15TH AT 9:40 IN L129 WITH THE COLLEGE COUNSELING STAFF.
 
  June 13 Some Juniors retake ACT.
 
SUMMER
 
    Students write to colleges and review information as it arrives.

   Volunteer for community organizations, participate in an academic program or find an appropriate job.

   Students and parents visit colleges during the summer.  It is important to use the summer months for visits because of the busy fall schedule.

   After a review of Junior grades and standardized test results, and as a result of their research of colleges, students should begin to narrow their lists.

   SAT/ACT preparation and college essay writing classes will be available as part of the Pembroke Hill summer program.

FALL AND WINTER -- SENIOR YEAR
 
  Late August    Early evening meeting with Seniors, Senior Parents, and College Counselors to discuss application process and answer questions.   (Date TBA)

 
  September    Student meets with college counselor to discuss list.  The list should be pared down to approximately 10 by this time.

   Inform your college counselor if you intend to apply Early Action or Early Decision.

   Write to colleges for applications, download directly from the college's website, use the Common Application or investigate other on-line possibilities.

   Begin work on college essays.

 
  September 12 Some seniors take ACT
 
  October 5 All secondary school materials and teacher recommendation forms with deadlines prior to December 1 must be given to Ms. Lenger and appropriate teachers no later than this date.
 
  October 10 Most seniors retake SAT.   (There will be a group registration provided by the counseling staff for this exam date)
 
  October Shawnee Mission East College Night (TBA)
 
  October 24 Many seniors retake ACT.
 
  November 1 Most Early decision/Early action deadlines.
 
  November 1 All state university applications, for out of state schools, should be mailed by this date for students to receive maximum consideration by the universities in question.
 
  Month of November    Continue work on essays.
   Work on applications to state universities.
 
  November 7 Many seniors retake one or more SAT Subject Tests.
 
  November 16 All secondary school materials and teacher recommendation forms with deadlines prior to February 1 must be given to Ms. Lenger and appropriate teachers no later than this date.
 
  November 30-December 4 Review final list with college counselor and discuss further testing needs.
 
  December 5 SAT Reasoning and SAT Subject Tests given.   Final testing opportunity for most Seniors.
 
  December 12 ACT given.
 
  December 15    Early decision/Early action notification date for most colleges.

   By this date students applying regular decision should request that the College Board send scores directly to any colleges to which they have applied.

Students are also responsible for sending test scores directly from SAT to any scholarship program(s) to which they have applied (e.g., National Merit Program) and/or to the NCAA Clearinghouse, if applicable.


   Register for the CSS/Financial aid PROFILE by this date.
 
  Holiday Recess Mail regular decision applications so that they arrive prior to the deadlines.
 
 
SPRING -- SENIOR YEAR
 
  February 1 File Financial Aid forms no later than this date.
(FAFSA and PROFILE, if required)
 
  Late March - Early April    Selective colleges mail decisions.

   Inform teachers who wrote for you of decisions and thank them for their support.
 
  Month of April    Make additional visits to colleges, if necessary, in order to reach your final decision.
 
  May 1, 2010 Inform ALL colleges of intentions regarding enrollment and send deposit to the ONE college of your choice.
